Every other size we mount is a question about the television. This one is a question about your house. 85-inch panels typically weigh 90 lbs or more, and that weight hangs on whatever is behind the drywall for as long as you own the TV.

So the first real task on an 85-inch install is not the panel, it is the framing. At least two studs, found and confirmed — not guessed at with a magnet. This is the size where a mount pulled out of drywall takes the drywall, the TV and sometimes the furniture underneath with it. We are blunt about this because the failure mode is genuinely bad. A mount that was anchored into drywall rather than timber does not fail gently or immediately. It holds for months, then lets go, and it takes a section of wall, a very large piece of glass and frequently the console underneath with it. We get called out to re-anchor other people’s work at this size more than at any other.

Two technicians, always. There is no version of an 85-inch install that one person should attempt, and we will not send one.

Height is where we will disagree with the internet. The formula gives way to the room. Centre-at-eye-level on an 85-inch screen can put the bottom edge below a media console, so the honest answer is usually the lowest height the furniture allows. We sit down in your room and decide from there. The standard advice — centre of screen at seated eye level, 42 to 48 inches off the floor — was written for smaller televisions. Apply it literally to an 85-inch screen and the bottom edge can end up behind your media console. The rule still points the right way; it just stops being arithmetic and becomes a judgement made from the sofa.

And the fireplace. Often the wrong answer at this size. Above a typical mantel an 85-inch screen either sits in the heat or sits so high that the viewing angle ruins it. Sometimes the right advice is a different wall, and we will say so. This is the advice customers least want and most often thank us for later. A screen this large above a mantel is usually either too hot or too high, and sometimes both. We bring a tape measure and we tell you what we find. If a different wall is the right answer, we would rather lose the upsell than mount something you end up resenting.

The last thing worth saying is about price. Sets like the Insignia F50 and the TCL QM5K have made 85 inches genuinely affordable, and that is a good thing. But the install is not cheaper because the TV was. The wall work, the crew and the bracket are identical whether the panel cost six hundred dollars or four thousand.
