75-Inch TV Mounting

Somewhere between 65 and 75 inches, mounting a television stops being a task and becomes a question about your house. Almost everything that makes a large install go wrong shows up for the first time at this size.

Start with the obvious one. 75-inch panels typically run in the 60 to 85 lb range, and more importantly the panel is wider than one person can span. Two technicians. Not a recommendation — a 75-inch panel is wider than one person's arm span, and the way it gets damaged is someone trying to hold it and align the bracket at the same time. We are specific about this because it is the point people most want to negotiate, and it is the one we will not: there is no single-technician version of a 75-inch install that we are willing to send.

Then the wall. Two studs minimum, and we want the bracket centred across them rather than clinging to one edge. On a 16-inch spacing a 75-inch bracket can reach three, which is better. On an older Nashville home you may also be dealing with plaster over lath, or a masonry chimney breast, or the metal-stud partitions common in condo conversions. Those all hold a 75-inch TV perfectly well with the correct hardware, and they all need different hardware. The surcharge for concrete, tile, stone or metal starts at $25; drywall carries no extra charge.

Then height, which is the one people underestimate. Still centre-at-eye-level, but the screen is tall enough that the maths starts to bite. Keep the centre near 42 to 48 inches and the bottom edge can end up low over a console — we set the final height with your furniture in the room, not from a table.

And then the fireplace question. Workable, but this is where fireplace installs start going wrong. Many mantels do not leave enough wall to get a 75-inch screen above the heat and below a neck-breaking angle at the same time. We measure before we quote. One more thing specific to this size: 75 inches is where the cheapest big screens live. The onn. 75-inch, the Insignia F50, the Hisense R6 — these put an enormous panel in the room for very little money, which is genuinely good. It also means 75-inch sets are the ones we most often find badly mounted by somebody else. A bargain TV falling off a wall takes the drywall and the furniture underneath with it, and the panel was never the expensive part of that.
