Is It Safe to Mount a TV Above a Fireplace?
It depends on the fireplace type and how hot your mantel area gets.
Gas fireplaces are the most common in Nashville homes and typically produce manageable heat. Most have draft mechanisms that direct heat forward rather than upward, making above-mount installs very safe with proper clearance.
Wood-burning fireplaces produce more radiant heat and smoke. Mounting is possible, but we take extra care to verify clearance and recommend more conservative heights.
Electric fireplaces produce almost no heat above the unit. These are the easiest fireplace mounts.
As a rule: if the wall above your fireplace is noticeably warm after 20 minutes of use, that heat can affect your TV over time. We always check before mounting.
What Height Should the TV Be?
The most common mistake is mounting the TV too high. People see the fireplace as a natural visual anchor and push the TV all the way to the wall above, which puts it at 60–70" from the floor. That causes neck strain for anyone sitting across the room.
Our target: center of screen at 42–48" from the floor for standard seating, or roughly at seated eye level.
On a fireplace wall this sometimes means 50–55" from floor depending on the mantel height. We discuss it with you before drilling — once the holes are in, the height is set.
How Do You Hide the Cables?
This is where the install either looks professional or looks like a weekend project.
On drywall fireplace surrounds: we can run cables completely in-wall using a power bridge kit. Zero visible wires — just the TV and a clean wall. This is cable concealment as an add-on for $60 per TV.
On brick, stone, or tile: in-wall routing is not practical without major renovation. Instead we use a slim surface raceway that can be painted to match your wall color. It still looks significantly cleaner than loose hanging cables.
What About Brick and Stone Fireplaces?
Very common in Nashville homes — and fully doable. We drill into the mortar joints (never the brick face) using masonry bits, and use properly rated wall anchors. There is a $25 surcharge for hard surfaces to cover the specialized hardware.
The result is just as clean and secure as a drywall install.
