One of the most common questions before a TV mounting appointment: how high should the TV be mounted on the wall?
Get this wrong and you spend every movie night craning your neck upward. Get it right and the TV disappears into the room like it was always meant to be there.
Here is the simple formula our Nashville installers use on every job.
The Formula: Eye Level When Seated
The center of your TV screen should sit at seated eye level — roughly 42 to 48 inches from the floor for most adults sitting on a standard sofa.
For a 65-inch TV, the screen is about 32 inches tall. If the center sits at 45", the bottom of the screen is at 29" and the top is at 61". That is a perfectly comfortable range for a standard 8-foot ceiling room.
How to Calculate It for Your Room
- Sit on your couch in the exact spot you watch TV most often
- Measure from the floor to your eye level — typically 42–46" for most adults
- That number is your target for the center of the screen
- Subtract half the screen height (for a 65" TV, the screen height is ~32", so subtract 16")
- The result is where the bottom of the TV should sit
Example: Eye level 44" → subtract 16" = bottom of TV at 28" from floor. Top would be at 60". Perfect for a typical Nashville living room.
Mounting Above a Fireplace
This is where most people go wrong. The fireplace mantel forces the TV higher — often 60–70" from the floor — which is too high for comfortable viewing.
If you are mounting above a fireplace:
- Consider a tilting mount so you can angle the screen slightly downward
- Aim for the center to be no higher than 55–58" if possible
- Talk to your installer about the trade-off between aesthetics and viewing comfort

Bedroom vs. Living Room
Living room: standard seated eye level — 42–48" to center works for almost everyone.
Bedroom: TV is typically watched from a reclined or propped-up position. Raise the center of the screen to 54–60" from the floor so it is comfortable when lying in bed.
Above a dresser: if the TV goes on the wall above furniture, mount it so the bottom clears the furniture by at least 6–8 inches.
Does TV Size Change the Ideal Height?
The center-of-screen formula stays the same. What changes is how the screen fills your field of view:
- A 55" TV mounted at 44" center height leaves a lot of wall above it — which is fine
- A 75" TV mounted at 44" center will have its top at ~68" — still comfortable
- An 85" TV mounted at 44" center will have its top at ~73" — getting tall, but manageable with the right seating distance
The viewing distance matters as much as height. For a 65" TV, comfortable viewing distance is 8–10 feet.
What About Very High or Vaulted Ceilings?
Nashville has many homes with 10–12 foot ceilings or open-concept rooms where the TV wall feels like an abyss. In these spaces, go no higher than 54–60" to the center — the extra wall space above will still look great.
